Good morning! I continue to enjoy viewing and listening to your various topics. They are continuing to give me clarity on certain ideas, as I begin to work on curriculum development at my school here in Chicago.
I have a question: I noticed in your workshop about fluent kriah, that you gave some great activity ideas for practicing kriah, such as 1.dagesh ball game 2.switching a letter or a nekuda with cards or blocks, and 3.having the child read the new words that are formed, and dividing into teams to try to read one word at a time accurately, to gain cards for your team, etc. Do you have practical ideas of activities that can be done for the next level up, like in a second grade classroom where the girls have already learned to read in kindergarten and first grade, and in second grade they are continuing to review all the rules again and get more practice to improve fluency? The teachers feel that continuing to practice over and over gets boring for the students, and they would love to hear a few new ideas to enhance the kriah in their classroom. What would your mehalach be in general for a mainstream classroom , to improve fluency? Thank you in advance. CS Atlas Do you see any differences this year because of our workshop?
We are using the Words of Wisdom program that we developed after your workshop with amazing success. My class mastered 175 words in Parshas Terumah to the point that they asked me to test them on all 175 words. All but 3 boys achieved perfect or near perfect scores (171 correct or >). 2 > 90. 1 fail… We know where we need to focus our resources. All this with less than 8 minutes per day invested in reviewing the wordbank. In fact there has been a net gain of class time as they are saying the Pesukim faster and have > attention span for Pesukim. Additionally I can now have 5 boys say each passuk in the time I used to have 3 say a passuk. We are using it religiously in 4 classrooms in Chaim Berlin. One more of our Rebbeim is trying 1/week as he acclimates to using a computer. It is being used in our resource room. A Rebbi is using it in Torah Temima. One more in another Yeshivah. Several Yeshivos have expressed interest. We have also printed Flashcards from the words and they are being used in 4 additional classrooms. We are giving a weekly Milim Quiz on the first grade words to our 2nd graders <6 boys out of 80 are scoring below 90%. When I start learning with a new student. I often review the student's report cards in order to gain a complete picture of the students academic history. One comment that I often see on report cards is:
"If they would try harder, they would succeed." Perhaps, if we would provide them with the tools that they need to succeed, they would try harder. What are your thoughts about this? Dear Rabbi Aichenbaum,
We are a small school in Manchester UK and our curriculum was developed with Rabbi Weber from Yerusholayim. In developing the curriculum we were looking for a way to allow the children in the foundation year of learning Chumash to become independent learners by mastering the Chumash text. This included several areas 1. Accurate reading 2. Shoroshim 3. Prefixes / suffixes 4. Putting the words together so they may understand the sentence 5. Comprehension of the sentence with the wider context of what they are learning 6. Being able to summarize / give a title to matter being learnt We begin working on all these areas as soon as they start learning Chumash. We used several schemes that helped us in achieving these goals, yet we had to work on developing the program and work sheets to ensure that the above aims are met. Your program seems to be an amazing piece of work that would help us tremendously. Many thanks, Rabbi M. Cohen 01/26/2014 12:19pmI think that teaching vocabulary is a vital part of building skills. But is there part of the system that formally teaches grammar and recognizing the different formulations of the same shoresh?

01/20/2014 8:41am I teach one-on-one. In just three months of using the Chumash Vocabulary WkBk, my 9-year old student could tiche וַיֹּאמֶר מֹשֶׁה בִּנְעָרֵינוּ וּבִזְקֵנֵינוּ נֵלֵךְ בְּבָנֵינוּ וּבִבְנוֹתֵנוּ בְּצֹאנֵנוּ וּבִבְקָרֵנוּ נֵלֵךְ כִּי חַג־יי לָנוּ: with minimal help!!! (P.S. The authors didn't put me up to this!) We do the WkBk. just twice a week for 15 minutes, plus his home review. THANK YOU! I recommend Yaakov for his expertise in resource room teaching

Rabbi Aichenbaum gave me the knowledge, skills and confidence to learn Torah on many levels which I had never thought possible. Every time I hear about the spreading of his programs, I get excited that others outside of Scranton can have the opportunity of gaining from his work, both through him directly via his Online Resource Room and indirectly through the many educators whom he has trained via his literature and workshops. Dear yaakov,
I've written this recommendation of your work to share with other LinkedIn users. Details of the Recommendation: "Rabbi Aichenbaum has been working with students for many years in special education Judaic department at the Scranton Hebrew Day School. He has done many years online work with students from many communities. I have seen firsthand how his program works and succeeds. He has created unique system to inculcate his students with strong foundations for learning the Hebrew language and incorporating this knowledge to learn specific words in the Torah. This allows to the student to bring this foundation into the general classroom, encouraging their participation with their peers and their teachers. I feel strongly that Rabbi Aichenbaum devotion, patience, creatively and sensitivity to each student allows him to be successful in his profession. I highly recommend Rabbi Aichenbaum for his online resource room and private tutoring."
