01/26/2014 12:19pmI think that teaching vocabulary is a vital part of building skills. But is there part of the system that formally teaches grammar and recognizing the different formulations of the same shoresh?

Yes. There are three parts to the process. The first step is to automatize the recognition of words through overlearning (constant review of words even after their meaning has been mastered). The second step is to teach that the "יונה" letters can disappear from the shoresh. This should also be overlearned through guided practice as you learn Chumash. Third, the basic prefixes/suffixes should be taught and overlearned. By this point, even if the student does not remember the exact tiche of the prefix/suffix, there will at least be a recognition that it is a prefix/suffix and then the student will be able to identify the actual word that they are familiar with in between the prefixes/suffixes. This process is developed in length in our teacher's manual, THE LIST.
